Somerville Community Services Incorporated is a non-government, not-for-profit, youth, family and community welfare organisation based in the Territory. The organisation believes in empowering people to make positive change. It has a team of 260 staff who are dedicated to delivering people-focused, responsive and professional services.
Somerville currently operates 11 supported accommodation homes in Darwin, Howard Springs and Katherine. The service supports 47 people, who have developmental disabilities and complex health care needs, on a permanent basis. The supported accommodation is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days per week to ensure that each person receives the quality support they require.
Somerville encourages an ‘open door’ policy which provides a solid foundation for collaboration where input is welcome and advice is freely given. It is vital that staff understand the mission, vision and values of the organisation and make a meaningful connection between their jobs and the purpose of the organisation.
The management team is responsible for ensuring employees are rewarded and recognised, have opportunities for career advancement and development, and enjoy a good work-life balance. These goals are achieved through mentoring, internal and external training, coaching, and on-the-job training. The celebration of cultural diversity is also key.
“We pride ourselves on the diversity and dedication of our workforce and our strong commitment to the principles of social inclusion for all people. Our commitment to excellence for over 50 years as a community service has been unwavering.” said Vicki O’Halloran, AM Chief Executive Officer.
The high value that Somerville Community Services places on its employees has seen it recognised as an Employer of Choice in the Australian Business Awards 2016.
